Clarineos in all colours. At present the black/chrome and white/green
are available.

"Will it break easily?" No, in fact it's very robust. And even if a key is broken off, replacing it is just a push-in job.
"Can it only play fairly simple music?" No, in fact it covers over three and a half octaves in the most useful of registers, from the E below Middle C to the third G above it. A good player can reach the next C above. It’s fully chromatic, meaning it plays all sharps and flats easily with a hole or key combination for each – no need for “half-holing”. You can play the whole of Mozart's clarinet concerto on it.
"Is it hard to get started?" No, it comes complete with a beginner's tutor, a DVD to visually show you how to hold the instrument and blow it, and a CD with backing tracks to the music in the tutor. It's especially designed for youngsters, being light, short, with small holes for their little fingers. Plus it has a smaller mouthpiece making it easier for children to blow and a small bore to make it easier for them to get a sound because there is less air inside to be activated by the reed. Young kids don’t have as much breath as older kids. It has slot-in-reeds and a simple cam ligature making it easy for small hands to prepare the instrument for playing. It has a simple 2-stage assembly – a click-in bayonet fitting for the bell and push-on mouthpiece. And it’s perfectly in tune every time.
"Will our young child grow out of it soon?" No, it's a full size instrument. They can be playing this same Clarinéo all their lives.
"Is there much music written for it?" An infinite amount. It's a C instrument, so your child can play all normal music straight off the page.
"Does that mean it can play along with other instruments easily?" Yes, be it guitar, piano, violin or any other popular instrument in normal pitch. Your child can play the same music off the same page that their friends are reading off for their instruments.
"Can you get a nice sound out of it?" Yes. Close your eyes and you couldn't tell the difference between it and a clarinet. Its acoustics were specially designed by one of the world's leading experts in instrument acoustics, Ted Planas. Top brands like Selmer-Paris engaged him to design instruments. Top players went to him for instrument alterations. The intonation is perfect too. The result is your children will sound quite good quite soon. This is a particular strength of the Clarinéo. Sounding good early on is a great encouragement for them to keep playing.
"Is 5 or 6 years of age too early for them to begin?" On the contrary. The younger they are the less inhibitions children have. This makes them more nonchalant about putting it in their mouth and blowing it. Because they don't “freeze” like you or I would because we're self-conscious adults, their first notes come more easily. That overcomes the first and often most discouraging obstacle for beginners on woodwind and brass – getting their first decent sound out the instruments. After that it's mainly a matter of knowing which keys to press or holes to cover to get which notes. The children are soon playing simple melodies.
"Can it help our child play other musical instruments?" Yes. When they reach age 10 or 12 and are then able to physically handle a clarinet it will only take them literally a few hours practice to play one. It’s the same fingering. The Clarinéo simply omits the alternative keys because even clarinet students don’t use them in their first year. So they’re not necessary on an instrument for 5 to 10 year olds. A few days practice on a sax and they'd be able to play that too. And because they have learned how to co-ordinate blowing a reed with fingering notes, it's easier for them to take up bassoon and oboe as well. The renowned clarinetist Julian Bliss started playing on a forerunner of the Clarinéo when he was 4. By 15 he was a major international recording and concert artist.
"So it’s a 'proper' musical instrument?" Yes. In the UK students can take Associated Music Board examinations on the instrument up to Grade 4. There is a complete series of music books published for Clarinéo players. Over 10,000 of the instrument's forerunner have been sold in the UK, many of them bought by primary and junior schools for their 6 to 10 year olds' music programmes. A proper music course exists for teachers teaching the instrument in elementary and junior schools.
"It's not a toy then?" No, it's a real musical instrument. It's just designed to be attractive to youngsters so that they feel it's 'cool' to have a Clarinéo rather than a traditional classical musical instrument. It's to encourage them into making music. The case is 'cool' too - very trendy to be seen carrying around.
"Is it expensive?" No, around $130.00 less than the price of a Wii. For only $259.00 your child can have the whole package including tutor book, DVD and CD. They'd have an instrument for life, and the chance of music for life.
Which colour would your child prefer: black, or one of the white ones?
