The name Cor Anglais is French for "English Horn", and it is a member of the Oboe family. It is easily recognised by the bulbous bell section and the bent reed holder (crook). It is larger than the oboe and pitched lower in the key of G rather than the C of the oboe. Though it is not a "horn" in the usual sense (that is, a brass instrument with a conical bore e.g. cornet, euphonium, tuba etc), it does have a mildly conical bore enabling the player to "overblow" an octave. It thus belongs to the woodwind group which includes the flutes and saxophones. The Clarinet family of instruments all have a basically straight bore (like the clarions in the brass family, e.g. trumpet, trombone, from which the name "clarinet" or "clarionette" is derived) and "overblow" a 12th (an octave + a fifth). The clarinets form their own woodwind family group, but they are on reasonably friendly terms with the other group despite the old joke about the oboe taking longer to burn......One suspects this joke has its origins in the percieved difficulty of playing these instruments ("Just do the practice!!").
