FLUGELHORNS

Kanstul, Trevor James Renaissance, Olds, Gerarda, Wisemann.

The FLUGELHORN is a Bb horn with the same range as the trumpet and the cornet. There seem to be two etymologies of the word (which is German for "wing-horn" or "winged-horn"). The first is that the instrument is a wide-bore, large bell bugle (in fact the French name for the instrument is "le bugle") which was used on the battlefield to summon the wings or flanks of an army to attack. The piston valve models replaced the keyed bugles as the instrument became added to the military bands in the 19th century. A possible date of earliest manufacture is 1832. The second possible origin is that it is in fact a Bb Saxhorn, developed by Adolphe Sax (inventor of the Saxophone) as part of a range of piston-valved horns for orchestral and military band use, probably around a similar time. The user-editable website Wikipedia has a bet each way and mentions both origins in its article on the flugelhorn. Perhaps it is also the appearance of the instrument that gives it its name - with the long valve tubes giving some sort of wing-like look to it (the grand piano is called a "flugel" in German because of its shape). Who can say?

Either way, the instrument has a warm, round tone compared to the bright clarion sound of the trumpet, and is often used as an auxilliary instrument by jazz trumpeters. It is also occasionally used in orchestral works, and is very popular in brass bands and concert bands.
