The practice mute is used to "deaden" the sound and make practising possible without the neighbours (and/or family members) complaining. Note that the cork (or rubber on some models) on a practice mute is continuous around the top of the mute where it contacts the instrument, providing a complete seal which keeps all the sound within the mute and thereby reduces the volume of the sound considerably.
The straight mute is used during performances to change the type of sound produced in order to add variety to the tone palette. Note that the cork is non-continuous and allows some sound from the instrument out. This provides a blend of the muted and unmuted sounds. The volume is only slightly affected.
The cup mute is like a straight mute with a cup added to the end to further change the sound. Denis Wick Adjustable Cup Mutes are like three mutes in one in that the cup can be used in a number of positions or removed entirely (you can then use the straight mute part alone or the cup section as a plunger or hat mute).
The French Horn stopping mute is used to transpose the pitch of the notes being played. This type of mute is only used on the French Horn, and features a reverse taper.
The Humes & Berg Du-all mute (also referred to as a wah-wah or wow-wow mute) is used to radically alter the tone of the instrument. This general type of mute is sometimes also referred as a harmon mute (although Harmon make more than just this type of mute) or as a bubble mute (referring to the shape of the Jo-Ral brand of wow-wow mute), much in the same way people refer to "Hoovering" the carpet. The tone can be varied by changing the position of the inner tube or removing it all together (which gives the Miles Davis type of sound).
The plunger mute was originally just that: a plumber's plunger or suction cup used to create a muted sound by holding it in front of the bell of the instrument. Modern plunger mutes have been designed and re-shaped for improved tone and often have a small handle attached to facilitate use. By alternately "closing" and "opening" the position of the mute, a variety of "wah" and "ooh" sounds can be created. Often used in big bands and jazz groups.
The hat mute is the same kind of thing as a plunger mute. Originally the player's hat was placed over the end of the bell or moved to produce the wah effect.
The bucket mute changes the tone and the volume of the instrument without altering the pitch and is clipped onto the front of the bell. It does not sit inside the bell and is stuffed with sound absorbent material.
The pixie mute is essentially a very small straight mute which sits completely inside the bell, allowing
the player to combine its use with a plunger or hat mute.
