Tenor trombone: Just to keep life interesting for music retailers, the trombone is sometimes played as a transposing instrument in the key of Bb (in which case the music is written in treble clef) and sometimes played as a non-transposing instrument with the music written in bass clef. The range of the tenor trombone is similar to that of the tenor saxophone (with the addition of "pedal tones" which extend the range down by an octave or so - see illustration below) or the euphonium.

In brass/military band music the music is generally written in treble clef. The written tone is therefore an octave and a tone above the note sounded. This allows the trombonist to read the so-called "octave-unison" with a trumpet part written in Bb in the treble clef or to sound unison with a tenor sax part, making life simpler for the arranger in the marching band, popular, rock or jazz settings.
In orchestral and concert music, the music is written in the bass clef without transposition - which makes more sense considering the pitch of the notes
. Many trombonists learn to read both bass and treble clefs (so the same note has two different "names") in order to increase the number of available gigs. I will refrain from mentioning any jokes concerning pizza delivery staff and the trombonist you haven't seen for a couple of years....(Unfortunately, this joke currently seems to apply to most musicians).
Trombones are also available in either Large Bore or Small Bore models, with or without the Bb/F trigger. Even classical players who don't read the music in Bb refer to the trigger as changing the key of the instrument from "Bb" to "F". When the trigger is pushed, some extra tubing is added by means of a valve to the section of the instrument before the slide, thus lowering the pitch by a fourth. The mouthpieces that fit the Large bore instrument will not fit the Small bore instruments, so the same cup size mouthpiece is often available in both bore sizes.
The slide replaces the valves of the other brass instruments as the mechanism by which the pitch is changed from the harmonic (overtone) range of the first position. Like the valves, the slide adds length to the tube by being moved out to other positions (there are seven slide "positions", but in reality the slide can be moved through an infinite variety of positions). The player has to develop a highly sensitive ear to be able to play in tune.
The Valve trombone is a tenor trombone with a set of valves like those on the other brass instruments. The slide section is still present but doesn't move. The instrument is the same size as the normal trombone.
The Bass Trombone is essentially a large bore tenor instrument with two or more triggers and an oversized bell. The slide cannot be made much longer than on the tenor as the players' arms won't grow to accomodate this. the bass trombone also uses much larger cup sizes for the mouthpiece to aid the production of the lower notes.
There are other instruments in the trombone family: the smaller Alto trombone, and some rarities like the Piccolo trombone, Contra-bass and tenors in various keys.
