TRUMPET INFORMATION

The trumpet is one of the oldest instruments, known to almost all civilisations and cultures, which makes you wonder who first thought of sticking a tube over their lips and blowing hard. The modern brass trumpet is a far cry from the original versions, which were probably made of bone, conch shells or wood.

The basic trumpet is traditionally a transposing instrument in the key of Bb. This means that the lowest note of the instrument with no valves pushed down is Bb below middle-C. However, the player reads the note as middle-C and calls it "C". Why was Bb chosen? It seems it just happened to be the best length of tube to give a good sound and range. The baroque standard of pitch was much lower (A = 412 Hz compared to today's A = 440 Hz) and instruments were much less uniform than they are today, so perhaps it was easier to just measure the length of an instrument you admired and copy it than to try to have a standardised pitch reference.

In the 1950s, some players with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra requested the Vincent Bach company to produce some trumpets in the key of C. This was done with two apparent reasons in mind: first, to save the player having to transpose orchestral parts twice*; second, to give a brighter sound. This has since become the standard instrument in Orchestras around the world, although it is not the traditional key for the instrument.

*Many orchestral scores pre-date the valved trumpet and call for the player to add "crooks" or loops of tubing to the end of the trumpet near the mouthpiece in order to play in different keys. The score will thus read, for example, "trumpets in G" or "trumpets in F", and the player added the appropriate crooks to play in that key. The music was then written in the key of C, the transposition to the new key being taken care of by the crook. A similar problem faced the French Horn players. If the trumpet is in Bb, the player has to mentally transpose the music to the new key and then again to compensate for the Bb tuning of the instrument. At least with a C trumpet the second transpositon is un-necessary.

Many other models are also available, of which the D/Eb, Piccolo in Bb and the "pocket" trumpet (a compact Bb trumpet) are the most common examples.

VALVES, MOUTHPIECES, BORE, BELLS AND LEAD-PIPES

Valves are of two types: piston style or rotary style. The piston type is used by almost all makers and players outside of Germany and the other German-speaking countries, where rotary valves are used.

Trumpet valves are made of a variety of materials: brass, nickel silver, steel and monel being the most popular. Despite the appearance of being a solid piece of metal with holes drilled through it, the pistons are usually hollow tubes with other bits of tubing soldered into place to pass through them. These lateral tubes align with the tubes on the cylinder section of the valve to direct the air into the extra bits of tubing called the "tuning slides", which are constructed of two overlapping tubes that allow movement to fine tune the notes.

Valves get stuck or sluggish when there is a build-up of foreign matter between the piston and the cylinder. This is often old valve oil - ironic, since the job of the oil is to keep the piston moving freely. Valves (and trumpets) are very easily damaged. NO ATTEMPT SHOULD BE MADE TO REMOVE STUCK VALVES BY FORCE. THIS IS A JOB FOR A QUALIFIED REPAIRER using the appropriate tools. To avoid sticking, the whole instrument should be cleaned on a regular basis, making sure that all old grease and oil are removed. This is by nature a messy job, and many people prefer to get the repairer to do it for them.

Mouthpieces come in a wide variety of styles. The contour and depth of the cup, the size of the hole leading to the shank, the taper of the shank and its internal bore and the shape and width of the rim of the cup all have a bearing on the ease of playing and the tone produced by a particular mouthpiece. Over the past 15 years or so, a lot of experimentation has gone on in relation to the overall mass of the mouthpiece, leading to oversized external dimensions and extra heavy models. Some players prefer this kind of feel and sound.

The bore of a trumpet is measured by the diameter of the tuning slide tube at the 2nd valve. The larger the bore, the more air the player expends in playing, but the richer the sound.

The other combination that trumpeters are often messing about with is the relationship between the bell and the lead-pipe (the straight bit leading from the mouthpiece to the valve cluster). The lead-pipe can be medium, medium-large, large or extra-large (no-one seems to make small these days). These are often given numbers which are usually smaller numbers for the large bore pipes and larger numbers for the small-bore types ( e.g. 18 is extra-large, 72 is medium). The larger lead-pipe allows (or demands) more air to be put through the trumpet but gives a fuller tone. Although the diameter of the bell at the fat end is often the same for the various bells made by a particular manufacturer, the taper of the bell leading to the end can vary. The more gradual taper of the bell allows for more "zing" in the tone and easier response. As with most things musical, the "best" combination depends on the personal preference of the particular player in question.
